Google closes the Google Spotlight Stories project

Read...
Active for over six years and with 16 animated shorts of rare beauty (and technology) made in an immersive vr, Google Spotlight Stories closes its doors. The official announcement arrived yesterday.
The message cames from Karen Dufilho, the executive producer of Google Spotlight Stories:

"As many of you know, Google Spotlight Stories is shutting its doors after over six years of making stories and putting them on phones, on screens, in vr, and anywhere else we could get away with it. The opportunity to contribute to story, animation, and tech has been like winning the lottery. You’ve all played a part and I’m so so proud of the work we’ve done together. Congratulations! My deepest gratitude to all of you."

The studio had produced and released 16 shorts, including projects from filmmakers and studios like Glen Keane (Duet), Jorge Gutierrez (Son of Jaguar), Aardman Animation (Special Delivery), Jan Pinkava (Windy Day, Piggy) and the last John KahrsAge of Sail, premiered last August at the Venice Film Festival.

The Pearl short by Patrick Osborne was also the first short film in history made with VR technology to be nominated for an Oscar (Academy Award) and an Emmy winner for Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Storytelling.

It is the end of an era for the immersive storytelling, started thanks to the efforts of Google, which now passes to the numerous independent production studios around the world that are pursuing this philosophy.

Here are two short films in complete version: the beautiful Duet and the last Age of Sail (the complete archive is on YouTube [link]):
