How to build 3D muscle and flesh for Incredibles 2

Sometimes it's good to go behind the scenes of the titles we're talking about. In this case we do a quick trip in one of the temples of computer graphics: Pixar Animation Studios.
But today we do not talk about the animators or the modellers, but about the figures behind them, the technical department, the programmers who create/encode the processes that generate the images work.

"The technology is not a revolution", explain Pixar scientists Breannan Smith, Fernando de Goes, and Theodore Kim, "..but rather an evolution of existing Neo-Hookean models". Processes that are used to prevent skin imperfections and preserve the naturalness of movements, as happens in muscles during extreme rotations and unusual movements such as the hyperelasticity of the character of Helen Parr/Elastigirl.

The video that we show tou includes examples of bends, twists with easy-to-understand animations about the processes applied to the superheroes of the movie Incredibles 2.

In the final part there is also the octopus of the movie Finding Dory, a model whose characteristics of malleability allow it to be crushed by some rollers and return to the original shape immediately afterwards.

These programming works are an integral part of all the processes of the big animation studio and also largely affect the budget of the movies (usually very expensive). Processes that will be used and improved also for future productions and often then sold or added in the development of commercial modeling/animation software that smaller studios (productions with smaller budgets) buy ready-to-use.

For the Incredibles 2 we will see many technical innovations and differences with the first chapter, now 14 years away, a lifetime in cg industry terms.

For those who want to know more about the processes, all the Stable Neo-Hook and Flesh Simulation documentation is available for free on the Pixar website at this link.

Here the video that show the processes:
