Scarlet - between fantasy and science fiction for Mamoru Hosoda

The new film by Japanese director Mamoru Hosoda has just been announced and will hit theaters in his homeland in about a year. Here are the first details.

The director of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and The Beast, Mirai and the latest Belle, produced in 2021, is ready to return with a new film titled Scarlet, in Japan Hateshi naki Scarlet (literally "Scarlet without limits").

Producer Yuichiro Saito assures that the film will have a worldwide distribution thanks to the partnership and co-production of Sony Pictures, while in Japan the distribution will be handled by TOHO.

The film will center on a strong princess named Scarlet who crosses space-time.

It will be an original story written and conceived directly by Mamoru Hosoda, who will obviously also take care of the direction. Hosoda also reports that it will not be made with classic Japanese-style 2D animations or Hollywood-style CG but will have a completely new look, created by his Studio Chizu. The story will also bring different feelings compared to his previous works thanks to action and romantic elements together. The project is defined by him as a "global classic".

Compared to the classic release window of his films, summer, this film is expected for winter 2025.
