The Boy and the Heron - Miyazaki wins his second Oscar
The Academy Awards concluded a few hours ago, the American industry awards event in which the winner in the animated feature film category was It was a Japanese film.
The feature film The Boy and the Heron written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Toshio Suzuki for the Studio Ghibli, among many awards collected in recent months (Bafta, Golden Globes, Annie), it also wins the Oscar for best animated feature film.
Beating off competition from Elemental (Pixar), Nimona (Annapurna), Robot Dreams (Arcadia Motion Pictures, Lokiz Films) and Spider -Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Sony Pictures), the Japanese feature film triumphs by bringing the second Oscar to the Miyazaki house, 21 years later Spirited Away.
It is the second animated feature film of the millennium to be made with animations in the classic two-dimensional style to receive the award, but also the second time that a feature film not made in the States has won in this category.
Master Miyazaki at 83 is the oldest person to win the Oscar in the animated categories.
In the Animated Short Films category, the short film War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John and Yoko by Dave Mullins (already nominated for the Pixar short "Lou") won the award.
Also worth mentioning is the statuette for Best Special Effects, normally given to the best American studios or co-produced for American blockbusters, which is given to the authors of the Japanese film Godzilla Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki (also director of the film), Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima with the effects created by approximately three dozen people as opposed to the hundreds employed in all other films in the category.
