Roald Dahl's The Twits becomes an animated feature film for Netflix

After the acquisition by Netflix of the label that holds the rights to all the books of the British author famous for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Roald Dahl Story Company, the first animated film is already in preparation.

The Twits will be the first story that the platform will bring to animation in 2025, with a feature film directed by Oscar nominee Phil Johnston (Ralph Breaks the Internet, Zootropolis, Wreck-It Ralph).

The book, translated into 41 languages and which has sold over 16 million copies worldwide, introduces us to Mr. and Mrs. Twit, the nastiest, most disgusting and smelliest people in the world who also own and manage the most dangerous amusement park and idiot of the world, Twitlandia. But when the Twits rise to power in their city, two brave orphans and a family of magical animals are forced to become as cunning as the Twits to save the city.

"I've always been attracted to reprehensible characters," shared Johnston. "I don't know what this says about me, and I really don’t want to look into it. Point is, The Twits was my favorite book when I was a kid. I love the Twits and their terrible tricks. I love that they lack self-awareness and personal hygiene and any inkling of human decency. And I love this movie because it reminds us that twits like the Twits, whose default emotions are anger and vengeance, can’t be allowed to win in our world."

In addition to directing, Johnston also wrote the screenplay with Meg Favreau, with Katie Shanahan and Todd Demong co-directing. Johnston himself appears as producer along with Maggie Malone and Daisy West co-producer. The animations will instead be produced by the British Jellyfish Pictures.
