The Mourning Children - the new anime by Sunao Katabuchi
The new anime by Japanese director and author Sunao Katabuchi is titled The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black. Below is the first teaser trailer.
The director of Black Lagoon and Mai Mai Miracle is ready to return with his own personal project that he has been working on since 2017, for which he is responsible for the story, screenplay and direction.
The film is set in Kyoto during the Heian period (10th century) in Japan. Tens of thousands of deaths, sewers full of corpses, children abandoned in the mountains and groups of wild dogs keeping watch outside the city.
The elegant image of the Heian period has been shown in many literary and artistic works. However, Katabuchi's new work takes us back to Kyoto, a thousand years ago, when the city was shrouded in darkness due to repeated plague epidemics.
Among the staff we highlight the assistant director Chie Uratani (Princess Arete), the chief animator Masashi Ando (The Deer King, Princess Mononoke), the artistic director Yuji Kaneko (Little Witch Academia, Kill la Kill) and the composer Akira Senju (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Mobile Suit Victory Gundam).
The anime is produced by the Tokyo-based studio Contrail, founded by Katabuchi in 2019, and MAPPA studios.
The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black (original title Tsurubami-Iro no Nagiko-tachi) was presented last Saturday at the Kyoto International Manga and Anime Fair.
