Also next Pixar's Turning Red film skips its theatrical release
Cold shower arrived yesterday from Disney which cancels the theatrical release of the next Pixar film to make it land directly on its streaming platform.
Just like the previous two original films from the Emeryville (California) studios, Pete Docter's Soul and Enrico Casarosa's Luca, who skipped the release due to the pandemic in theaters, the next film, Turning Red, writtend and directed by Domee Shi, will follow the same fate.
The constant worsening of the health situation around the world has led Disney executives to this choice and to release the title directly on its streaming platform, at no additional cost, just like the two aforementioned titles.
It should be noted that the two latest films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Raya and the Last Dragon and Encanto were released in theaters, Raya was also available in Premier Access with additional subscription fees.
From rumors inside Pixar (from Business Insider last April) they are a little frustrated that their films are "downgraded" to direct-to-stream. "We don't want to be just a Disney + title. Our movies are made for the big screen, without distractions, without looking at your phone ect."
The next film Lightyear, Toy Story spin-off, however, is currently scheduled to hit theaters in June.
