Makoto Shinkai's new anime will be a fantasy road movie
The young and brilliant Japanese author and director Makoto Shinkai, one of the most popular in the anime world, presented his new film.
Punctually every three years the author, director, animator and so on (he really takes care of all the phases of a production) presents his new work. In 2022 it will be the turn of Suzume no Tojimari (literally Suzume's Door-Locking), with a plot that presents catastrophic-fantasy genres already addressed by the author.
The film, announced with a presentation a few days ago, follows 17-year-old Suzume who lives in a quiet town on the island of Kyushu. She one day she meets a young man looking for a door. Following him she finds one standing isolated in a ruined landscape. These doors, which are appearing all over Japan, are wreaking havoc on the world. Suzume intends to close them all.
Its official website describes the film as a "road movie" that "describes the growth and emancipation" of the young protagonist, especially in this period of "anxiety and difficulty", a "ray of light on our journey".
Distributed by Toho in Japan, the film is written, scripted and directed by Makoto Shinkai with animations produced by Comix Wave studios (always behind Shinkai's work) and Story Inc. (studios involved in the latest Weathering with You).
