Cinematography: New Techniques Behind The Mitchells vs. the Machines


Our professional Cinematography in Animation Industry column is back to bring us into the production of Sony's The Mitchells vs. the Machines.


The producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller take us into the production of the feature film directed by Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe and made by Canadian studio Sony Pictures Imageworks.

A film born from the experience of Lord and Miller's award-winning title Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and the innovative production techniques used for this film, expanding the concepts to the world of social network.

The starting look is made with classic stylized freehand drawing, with fills made with dynamic brush colors and the production concentrated on the edges of the moving elements on which to emphasize the lights.

But many special effects are made in two dimensions and/or heavily stylized and then integrated into 3D environments, which emphasizes the irony towards the social world with the inclusion of stickers of any kind that artists have enjoyed inserting almost everywhere.
