What If ...? First Marvel animated series and all the Disney news
Yesterday Disney introduced investors to all the new productions of the brands it owns and, of course, there are new animated productions in sight.
Here the animated products line-up announced yesterday:
- Raya and the Last Dragon, Disney feature film expected in Spring 2021 [news]
simultaneously in theaters and in Premium VOD on Disney+.
- Encanto, a feature film directed by Byron Howard (Zootopia, Tangled) and Jared Bush (Zootopia) and co-directed by Charise Castro Smith, expected in November 2021.
- Baymax, a spin-off animated series of Big Hero 6, expected in 2022.
- Zootopia+, a series of animated short films spin-off of the homonymous film expected in 2022.
- Iwájú, a new original series that will arrive on Disney+ in 2022.
- Tiana, a comedy-musical series spin-off of the feature film The Princess and the Frog expected in 2023, the first Disney series starring one of its princesses.
- Oceania, The Series expected in 2023.
- Lightyear, a series that will explore the past of the well-known main-character of the Toy Story saga, directed by Angus MacLane and expected in 2022.
- Turning Red, a film directed by Domee Shi (author of the short Bao) with a story set in Asia, expected in 2022.
- Win or Lose (2023), a Pixar's first original series which follows a middle school softball team in the week leading up to their championship game, with each episode told from the perspective of a different character.
- Pixar Popcorn, a collection of short films starring established Pixar characters, will hit Disney+ in January 2021.
- The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, the first Ice Age film since 2016, will come out on Disney+ in early 2022. There was no mention of Blue Sky Studios (former 21st Century Fox animation studios).
- Night at the Museum, another Fox franchise, is getting an animated installment, to be released on Disney+ in 2021 with Shawn Levy returns as director.
- The Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise is getting its first fully animated feature in 2021.
Marvel Studios also move on to animation with their first animated series (since the opening of their production studios), made with CG animations and titled What If ...?, anthological series inspired by the comic of the same name.
Created and written by A.C. Bradley and directed by Bryan Andrews, the series tries to explores what would happen if major moments from the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) occurred differently.
The 10 episodes of the first season will be released by mid-2021 and will be part of the "phase four of the MCU", while a second season is already in production.
