The new Ghibli film and other 3 animated film selected for Canner 2020

Most of the 2020 film festivals (and not only) have been canceled due to the global pandemic, but some have re-invented themselves in virtual editions, such as Annecy and Cannes who yesterday announced their lineup.

In a livestreaming yesterday, the festival management has pitted the numbers of this edition, of all 2,067 projects submitted and those chosen for this anomalous (virtual) 2020 edition.

Four in particular the animated feature films selected, starting from the upcoming return to the direction of Pete Docter for the Pixar's feature film Soul, with an original story written by Docter.

The representative from the far east will instead be Aya to Majo, the new and awaited title of the Studio Ghibli, the debut with a feature film made with CGI animations directed by the son of the founder Goro Miyazaki, with the story inspired by Diana Wynne Jones'book Earwig and the Witch.

The others are two gems produced entirely in Europe: the animated documentary by Jonas Poher Rasmussen which tells the emotions and experiences of an Afghan refugee arriving in Denmark: Flee, and the debut of the French artist Aurel (Aurélien Froment) with Josep, a beautifully crafted, deeply feeling portrait of Catalan artist, Spanish Civil War soldier, concentration camp escapee, blacklisted and underrecognized luminary Josep Bartolí.

The festival director Thierry Frémaux noted the increasing number of works received, as well as that of the countries represented (147 compared to 138 in 2019). Some sections will be announed soon as well as the complete program and dates (currently scheduled for July).

We will keep you updated.
