Universal and Lego sign exclusive five-year film deal
The world of animation will see Lego bricks still protagonists in the future. This is the summary of the new agreement made with the Universal studios after the non-renewal with the Warner Bros. last Christmas [news].
After years of successful films and others less, the company of the well-known colored bricks and the studios Warner Bros. had finally closed their collaboration last Christmas.
Not even six months later Lego signs a new one with Universal rivals. Here are the specs:
Universal and Lego have signed an agreement for the exclusive use of Lego assets for five years to develop, produce and distribute films in theaters (source Deadline).
The deal was signed by Donna Langley from Universal Filmed Entertainment Group and Jill Wilfert from LEGO Group. Wilfert will also feature as producer on upcoming films alongside Dan Lin (former producer of the latest Lego films) and Jonathan Eirich.
In December 2019 Warner Bros. had not renewed the agreement with Lego that had seen them together create a franchise of $1.1 billion in only box office with four animated films. Universal was the first major to take over the Christmas negotiations.
The contract has also been extended to the Universal Music label, with which projects dedicated to children are planned in the coming years "to celebrate and expand children's creativity and their passion for music".
Universal Pictures is the owner of the animation studios Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions) and DreamWorks Animation, but it's still early to talk about projects or something other.
